The amendment, introduced by Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), and agreed to by unanimous consent in the committee, would bar anyone who has ever been convicted of certain violent crimes — even if they committed the crimes in their youth and have served their sentence — from ever getting food stamps (called SNAP benefits) ever again. [Center on Budget and Policy Priorities] president Robert Greenstein slammed the amendment in a statement Tuesday, calling it “stunning.” Because African Americans are incarcerated at a higher rate than other races, he says, “the amendment would have a skewed racial impact. Poor elderly African Americans convicted of a single crime decades ago by segregated Southern juries would be among those hit.” Under current law, there is only a lifetime ban on food stamps for convicted drug felons, and many states have opted out of that ban.

The measure wouldn’t just hurt ex-cons. Greenstein points out that “the amendment would mean lower SNAP benefits for their children and other family members.”

Plus the amendment could cause higher rates of recidivism. “Ex-offenders often have difficulty finding jobs that pay decent wages,” Greenstein says. “The amendment could pose dilemmas for ex-offenders who are trying to go straight but can neither find jobs nor, as a result of the amendment, obtain enough food to feed their children and families.”

Wendy’s training video - chili can be served with cheese

The first time I saw this, I kept randomly singing, “And the cups are to goooooooo!” driving Nelson crazy.

Just waiting for my ibuprofen and Xanax to kick in before bed, so I watched these and have decided these training videos are the best thing I have ever seen in my life. Bridget and Shane, did you have to watch these?!?

Let me tell you a thing or two about Wendy’s training videos: First, that hideous shirt is what we wore when I started there. The second… the second thing is that these videos were hand-crafted by the most devious of industrial filmmakers with the sole purpose to worm this knowledge way into the very center of a new employee’s brain. And stay there. For good. To live there. To by chance run into another piece of clutter, fall in love, settle down, and wind up with kids and a good job at the bank.

The sandwich video left the largest impression upon my psyche, much like a fist in a bowl of ham salad. You see, the secret method to creating a Wendy’s sandwich is the order in which the condiments are placed on the bun.

White, red, green. White, red, green.

White, red, green.

Mayo. Ketchup. Pickle. Onion. Tomato. Lettuce.

Chicken sandwich? Mayo, tomato, lettuce. White, red, green. Single with everything? Mayo, ketchup, pickle, onion, tomato, lettuce (and mustard). White red green, white red green.

It repeated twice. Two iterations of white, red, green. To make sure we learned it they made a song. They made a goddamned song.

White, red, AAAAAAAND GREEN! White, red, AAAAAAAND GREEN!

This was important information, vital to the survival of every Wendy’s restaurant and employee in existence.

There may have been dancing. I’m not sure because I zoned out halfway through. I’m sure it was part of my brain’s coping strategy. My body would have to endure this punishment but not my soul.

Anyway, the mustard went on the burger patty last and you had to smear it which meant your mustard spatula always had hamburger on it. Mustard never really fit in with the rest of condiments that were in the song and was what I imagine to be an afterthought discovered after the song was paid for. Just stick it on the meat, they probably said.

I hated putting mustard on the patty. You can’t smear things on cooked meat with a putty knife. I mean, you can, but it’s not satisfying. The meat’s greasy, so the mustard beads up like water on a coat of wax. It doesn’t smear well, it just kind of sits there imitating a smear.

I identified with the mustard on a few levels.
